I purchased this paperback before I realized that it was available as a free download for Kindle. Actually, it seems appropriate to read this book the old-fashioned way.The book was originally written in 1921. It has been re-released a couple of times since then.
In the 1880s, reeling from two personal tragedies that occurred within hours of each other, and disillusioned with the New York political scene, TR traveled West to the Dakota Territory. His primary goal was to shoot a buffalo. He quickly became enamored of the North Dakota Badlands and involved in the social and political fabric of the territory. He became a cattle rancher. All over ND you will see the quote from TR that if he had not visited North Dakota, he would never have become President. TR encouraged Herman Hagedorn to write this book and gave him complete access to his papers.
While I would have loved it if this book had photographs, Hagedorn is such a good writer that the pictures are there in his words. There are plenty of good stories and character portraits. This is not my usual type of reading matter, but I picked this book up in Medora (the town at the edge of Theodore Roosevelt National Park) and was immediately hooked. The writing is fresh and readable, 90 years after the book was originally published. This is a real find.

Wow - who would have imagined Theodore Roosevelt as a young "dude" in the bad lands of the west! This book opened my eyes to in a whole new version of the past president. What great adventures he had as he lived his early years helping to tame the wild wild west. A surprise awaits you as you meet the young Mr. Roosevelt.
If you've read Roosevelt's auto biography or not, add this book to your list. Several stories are repeated from his auto B, but to me that simply adds credibility. The author of this book writes ( I search,?), more clearly than T.R., who I think has a rather stiff narrative style. I don't mean to say this is a rewrite of TR's autob, it's not. Much third party info is in this book. For a fan of TR this is a must.
This book details Theodore Roosevelt's experience in the Badlands of North Dakota after the deaths of his mother and wife. It gives a picture of what life was like in that area with the scenery, the hunting, the cattle business and other adventures. Roosevelt's political life is touched on briefly. The experiences of this part of his life in many ways shaped his later life and presidency. The book is not a difficult or dry read and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in Western history.
The book may be old but it is informative in discussing the young Teddy Roosevelt. His time spent ranching and hunting in the badlands turned him into the president he would become. His appreciation of the land around his ranch convinced him to later establish the national parks. The mantra of "speak softly and carry a big stick" is apparent in his daily dealings with the negative elements around him. These and other aspects of his character that would show themselves throughout his life are all here.
I have read several books about Roosevelt and found this to be the most interesting and influential. This book describes the brief period in American history when the West was wild and which continues to be romanticized today. This period in Roosevelt's life was perhaps the most influential in changing American history. The reader would not obviously know that this book x written 100 years ago either. I recommend this to anyone interested in the real stories of the wild West or for anyone interested in learning a more inside view of Roosevelt's persona.
Fascinating well written book about TR's life in one of the most beautiful, but god forsaken areas in the United States. The book is really a study of character, perseverance and individual toughness combined with real characters from the Wild West. TR's neighbors were horse thieves, cow punchers, corrupt officials, Indians, physicians, saloon owner and ordinary town folk. One of his neighbors a wealthy French aristocrat, the Marquee de Mores, life story is truly unique to the point of being unbelievable. The marquee had numerous duels in his brief lifetime and challenged TR to a dual, but backed down when TR accepted. TR once said "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are" summarizes perfectly TR's time in the Bad Lands.

Don't be fooled by this cover. This is a very well-written and well-edited book that was written many years ago.
Teddy Roosevelt was one of those rarest gems of humanity. And, in fact, he was the last politician, in my humble opinion, who actually was greater in many other pursuits, before and after, becoming president.
This biography actually feels as if it is a time machine, transporting me back to the time before Roosevelt went off to war in Cuba.
I suspect this book is passed over by many simply because of the cover. That's a shame, because I think the quality of the writing and the fact that it is free justifies this as a must read for anyone I terested in American history.
